#IowaState Students Recieve High Honors at IPPA Taste of Elegance Contest

2016 Mar 31

Iowa State's Culinary Science Club proved its merit by placing first at the Iowa Pork Producers Association's 2016 Student Taste of Elegance contest in early March. This regional competition was held at the Des Moines Area Community College's Iowa Culinary Institute in Ankeny, Iowa.

Casey Halder was part of Iowa State's winning team of #CYCLONE students. Halder, a Culinary Sciences major, and teammates put their in-class and lab experience to work as they prepared the winning meal of: Smoked/Braised Pork Shoulder with Saffron White Bean Puree, Heirloom Tomato Salad and Chorizo Croquette.

Halder, of Urbandale, was required to work as part of a team to create a meal using Boston Butt/Pork Shoulder. This competition required creativity, communication and collaboration while working within the given time-frame.

Teams' recipes were judged on taste, appearance and originality. Side dishes and garnishes were meant to complement the pork entree and provide a wholesome dining experience.

#IowaState was one of thirteen colleges represented in the IPPA annual Taste of Elegance contest. The goal of this competition was to combine the agricultural industry with the fine dining experience to celebrate pork and Iowa's culinary stakeholders.
