2017 Jul 19

Shane Chapman, studying horticulture at Iowa State University, took learning out of the classroom to explore the world participating in a short-travel study abroad program this summer.

Chapman participated in "Fruit and Vegetable Crop Production in Germany," and spent time in Geisenheim, Germany; Trier, Germany; Heidelberg, Germany; Stuttgart, Germany; Lake Constanz, Germany; Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany; Munich, Germany.

This fruit and vegetable production study abroad course allowed students to gain valuable knowledge, skills, and abilities about principles and practices of commercial horticultural crops.  Students learned agricultural techniques and production practices in Germany, with an emphasis on fruit and vegetable systems.  Topics included site selection, soil fertility, equipment and tools, season extension strategies, and marketing in Germany’s climate and culture. Iowa State students interacted with students at University of Hohenheim and participated in a student exchange workshop, as well as visited cultural and historic sites, botanical gardens, and nurseries in Germany.

The Ag Study Abroad Office works with faculty members in departments to offer a variety of trips that help students gain a new perspective at locations all around the world. This summer nearly 100 students participated in travel programs facilitated through the office. Through trips offered over breaks in the academic year, during the summer and semester-long exchanges or internships, students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been on all seven continents studying agriculture and life sciences.
