Elise Kendall and Team Gung-ho Globies are finalists in the Thought For Food Challenge.

2015 Feb 18

In a competition challenge to address the very real need to feed 9 billion people, Elise Kendall and the Gung-ho Globies team from Iowa State University showed their personal passion for global development and goal of ending world hunger, as one of 10 finalist teams from around the world.

The Thought For Food (TFF) Challenge encourages teams of university students around the world to create a project that addresses world hunger. Finalists are then invited to the Thought For Food Summit, held February 13-14, 2015, in Lisbon, Portugal, for two rounds of competition and to attend the summit with attendees representing companies around the world.

Kendall, a Global Resource Systems major, was on the team of Iowa State students who created a mobile solar dehydrator they called "KinoSol." The tool was made for efficiency and has a protected storage unit. It was designed to increase market accessibility, prevent food loss, and increase nutrition and food security during times of instability in communities. KinoSol uniquely addresses several problems faced around the world by dehydrating fruits and vegetables using solar energy through a mobile unit for consumption at alternate times when those items are not readily available.

As a finalist, the competition provided resources to further develop the project and mentorship as the teams ran into questions. Projects were judged on innovation, sustainability, engagement and uniqueness.

TFF is a movement dedicated to finding breakthrough solutions to combat the global challenge of feeding the world. Read more about the summit and competition at www.tffchallenge.com.
