Erica Henderson honored as a George Washington Carver Scholar

2018 Feb 21

Erica Henderson, a student in Global Resource Systems at Iowa State University, was honored as a George Washington Carver Scholar. Intended for multicultural student leaders with strong academic credentials, the George Washington Carver scholars program pairs a scholarship with community building and leadership development opportunities.

The George Washingto Carver Scholars (GWC) experience begins a student's first year when they attend a GWC Orientation a first-year retreat designed to build a commuity of GWC scholars. Then the scholars participate in the Carver Academy, which provides:

  • University Studies course designed to help scholars adapt to student life at ISU
  • Personal crisis intervention
  • Campus involvement
  • Career Exploration Center workshops to prepare for future careers

In addition, the GWC scholars complete 10 hours of community service, maintain GPA and course completion requirements and participate in three GWC-sponsored events each semester.

Beyond the first year experience, GWC scholars are expected to be trained and serve as GWC Peer Mentors where they have the opportunity to help first year GWC scholars to succeed in student life on campus.
