2017 May 11

Garett Onstot, of Carlisle , majoring in Animal Science, successfully completed Spring 2017 as a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Ambassadors at Iowa State University. This highly selective group of students plays a pivotal role in the recruitment activities of the college.

Members of this group, open to all students in the college, are required to log at least 20 hours of volunteering each semester and maintain attendance and participation requirements. Ambassadors serve actively on one of seven committees, each tasked with specific duties related to the purposes of recruitment and engagement within the college.

Onstot served as member of the Junior Visit Day Committee, which is responsible for planning a day-long event on campus for high school juniors. The event included tours of campus and various interest areas including research farms, the opportunity to meet with academic advisers and faculty to learn about curriculum, and see the variety of student opportunities through a club fair. Nearly 100 prospective students attended the April event.

Over the course of spring 2017, the Ambassadors logged over 2,000 volunteer hours. Through each committee, members get experience with project management and leadership in addition to practicing teamwork and communication skills.

Governing the Ambassadors is a leadership team who is made up of committee chairs, a representative from each committee, and elected officers which includes a chairperson, vice-chair, and secretary. The CALS Ambassadors are advised by Beth Foreman, Student Services, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
