2017 Jul 19

Elizabeth Hada, studying global resource systems at Iowa State University, took learning out of the classroom to explore the world participating in a short-travel study abroad program this summer.

Hada participated in "Creating a School Garden: Service-Learning in Uganda" as well as "Global Food and Agriculture: China," and spent time in Kampala, Uganda; Beijing, China; Chuzhou, China; Hangzhou, China; Pujiang, China; Huzhou, China; Shanghai, China.

In Uganda, the group developed a school garden for an elementary school in the Kamuli District and worked with the teachers in grades 1 through 7 to deliver curriculum in agriculture, science and nutrition using the garden. In China, students had the chance to explore the different perspectives of the food and agricultural industries through visits to producers and processors, food industries, government and non-government organizations and university partners who are active in food and agriculture.

The Ag Study Abroad Office works with faculty members in departments to offer a variety of trips that help students gain a new perspective at locations all around the world. This summer nearly 100 students participated in travel programs facilitated through the office. Through trips offered over breaks in the academic year, during the summer and semester-long exchanges or internships, students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been on all seven continents studying agriculture and life sciences.
