Hugen takes short-travel course abroad through Iowa State University

2017 Jul 19

Emily Hugen, studying agronomy at Iowa State University, took learning out of the classroom to explore the world participating in a short-travel study abroad program this summer.

Hugen participated in "Creating a School Garden: Service-Learning in Uganda," and spent time in Kampala, Uganda.

This service learning internship allowed Iowa State students to work in Uganda developing a school garden for an elementary school in the Kamuli District. This project is in partnership with the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences' Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Program (CSRL) and Makerere University. Not only did students develop the garden and work with the teachers in grades 1 through 7 to deliver curriculum in agriculture, science and nutrition using the garden, they participated in one or more team projects that support the overall goals of the school gardens program.

The Ag Study Abroad Office works with faculty members in departments to offer a variety of trips that help students gain a new perspective at locations all around the world. This summer nearly 100 students participated in travel programs facilitated through the office. Through trips offered over breaks in the academic year, during the summer and semester-long exchanges or internships, students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been on all seven continents studying agriculture and life sciences.
