Isley attended Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA) meeting and quiz bowl competition

2018 Feb 15

Catherine Isley competed at the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA) undergraduate quiz bowl February 2-6, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida, representing Iowa State University. The group of eight undergraduates attending had a strong showing overall in the tournament of 32 teams.

This Jeopary-like, double elimination, team-based competition tested student knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, marketing, management, resources and policy, statistics, and agriculture business and finance. Teams select question categories with differing point values. Organziers of this particular competition event mix up students from all participating institutions into teams of 4 members. Several teams with Iowa State students advanced far in the tournament. The best finish of a team that included a member from Iowa State was fourth.

Not only did Isley, majoring in agricultural business, and the participating students show off their knowledge in competition, they had the chance to network with professionals from across the country as they moved through rounds. Coaching the team is Dr. Georgeanne Artz, assistant professor in the Department of Economics.

Students interested in participating on the quiz bowl team enroll in a class designed to help them study topics related to the specific categories. The team members practice as a group in mock competition once a month and do individual studies on assigned topics each week to expand their knowledge in that particular area. Students travel to a total of 3 competitions throughout the year. All competitions are structured slightly different but content areas remain similar.
