2017 May 11

Macy Marek, of Riverside, majoring in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Education - Teacher Certification, successfully completed Spring 2017 as a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Ambassadors at Iowa State University. This highly selective group of students plays a pivotal role in the recruitment activities of the college.

Members of this group, open to all students in the college, are required to log at least 20 hours of volunteering each semester and maintain attendance and participation requirements. Ambassadors serve actively on one of seven committees, each tasked with specific duties related to the purposes of recruitment and engagement within the college.

Marek served as member of the Youth Organizations Committee, which is responsible for coordinating workshops, tours, and hospitality at strategic youth events. This semester, welcomed over 100 students from across the state to campus during Iowa 4-H Recognition Day. They coordinated around 80 tours over the 2-day Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference in addition to serving over 3,000 at the annual CALS-hosted BBQ.

Over the course of spring 2017, the Ambassadors logged over 2,000 volunteer hours. Through each committee, members get experience with project management and leadership in addition to practicing teamwork and communication skills.

Governing the Ambassadors is a leadership team who is made up of committee chairs, a representative from each committee, and elected officers which includes a chairperson, vice-chair, and secretary. The CALS Ambassadors are advised by Beth Foreman, Student Services, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
