Shelly Palmer learns about nutrition in Peru

2015 Aug 13

Shelly Palmer, majoring in diet and exercise at #IowaState, traveled to Peru with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Study Abroad Office for nearly four weeks to study nutrition in an international setting.

Palmer and fellow students on the trip learned about the culture and history of the area in addition to current health issues. While in country, the group was in the bustling city of Lima, a village in the Andean highlands, sand dunes in Ica, and the historical area around Cusco and Machu Picchu. The students participated in hands-on activities with Peruvian researchers and students. They talked with rural villagers about daily life and eating habits, collected food samples from local markets, and tested that food for pathogens. All these tasks helped expand the students' perspective on nutrition.
